Response to Inner West Council’s Strategic Plan 2025-29

The Strategic Plan and Operational Plan sets out Council’s objectives for the next four years, along with targets and performance indicators. IWBC submitted a response, asking for tighter and better wording, so that improving provision for Active Transport is made a more rigorous process.

Executive Summary

While the Draft Community Strategic Plan document is very attractive and has the appropriate sections, the elements which speak to a more sustainable and healthier Inner West are weak and not backed up by specific spending or allocation of local or State resources. If this is our guiding document, then we will not have a more liveable Inner West, and if our appropriate population growth occurs without more walking and cycling, we will suffer from more pollution, more congestion and a decreased quality of life. This plan could be better: more specific, more measurable and more meaningful.

The DP, OP is more specific. Below we have included comments on relevant sections. Overall, we find the measures in the DP, OP are also missing or vague.

IWC Strategic Directions.

IWC strategic directions represent the key themes arising from our community priorities. They align with active transport, but there is scant evidence of a plan to increase active transport in the body of the CSP.

1. An ecologically sustainable Inner West (active transport reduces our carbon footprint, reduces the need for space wasted for parked cars and roadways).

2. Liveable, connected places and transport. (Active transport increases liveability and reduces the need for pollution and carbon usage)

3. Creative communities and a strong economy

4. Healthy, resilient and caring communities (Active transport is resilient and slower)

5. Progressive, responsive and effective leadership. (Leading communities worldwide are increasing their leverage of, and support for, active transport)
